Overall a nice album, with DJ Okawari playing to his strengths well. Not to detriment the quality of them however, it is perhaps just a personal taste as I find myself skipping these tracks and picking out the straight instrumentals. A staple present in his previous releases, this is possibly the only qualm I had with the album, and the previous ones. The album also feature’s a heavy line-up of female vocalists Amanda Diva, Stacy Epps, Lauren Amaris, Brittany Campbell and Tekitha. The choice of instrumentation, whether piano/violin etc, tends to be a lot more fleshed out and have a more substantial presence in the tracks than a lot of other similar artists. Listen to music by DJ OKAWARI on Apple Music. Whilst I can appreciate this opinion in certain circumstances, Okawari in my opinion does stand out and make distinctive releases. I’m aware there is some criticism of Japanese artists in this genre, and the seemingly blurry sonic boundaries that distinguish each one’s music.

The third full release by Japan’s DJ Okawari, Kaleidoscope follows on from Diorama (2008) and Mirror (2009) and brings a collection of tracks featuring the jazzy lounge sound synonymous with Okawari, as well as the emotionally charged compositions that follow a more progressive nature. After finally getting my ears around it after its release last week, the wait was worth it.

Discography Mirror (2009)ġ0.Minamo(MUSIC by TSUKINO SORA,DJ OKAWARI)Ġ4.Kaleidoscope feat. This is something I’d been waiting on for a while. In short, it’s all gorgeous, and perfect study music.

Many are simply instrumentals (more so on his first album) that merge traditional Japanese music and natural sounds with modern hip-hop/jazz processing. Unlike say, DJ Clazzi, who writes songs that other people sing and are held up by said singers, DJ Okawari’s music is more about the instrumental composition and mixing than it is about the voices that ornament those songs. The hip-hop meets ambient music kind of scared me a bit, but my fears instantly disappeared as all the songs I’ve listened to so far are beautifully composed. Thankfully, the album covers were beautifying some amazing music, music that I thought I didn’t think I’d like as much as I thought I would. All are designed by Japanese artist Marumiyan. But if I want to be entirely honest, what initially drew me to his music are the absolutely stunning album covers. Listen free to DJ Okawari Kaleidoscope (Encounter, Brown Eyes and more). Although it sounds really strange on paper, trust me, it totally works. He’s a Japanese Artist that captures Hip-hop, R&B, Electro-jazz styles under an overarching Ambient music style (the music genre revolutionized by Nujabes). I stumbled across DJ Okawari while I was skimming through some K-Indie (like Zitten) but don’t get confused, DJ Okawari isn’t Korean.
